2025-2026 Season

Practice begins the week of November 10th 2025. Additional details regarding each team will be provided in advance by email. 

Important dates:  

  • Travel registration will close on Saturday, Oct. 4.
  • Travel team tryouts will be held the week of Oct. 6 to 10. Players MUST be registered at attend tryouts.
  • Recreational registration will close on Friday, Oct. 10.

In the 2025-26 season, we plan to offer the following programs:

GRADE 1-2
An 8-week introductory 1-hour clinic on Saturday mornings at Shay Elementary that focuses on skills and drills.

GRADE 3-4
Team recreational basketball on 9-foot hoops. Includes a 1-hour evening practice during the week and 8 games, typically on Saturdays. 
Separate teams/leagues for boys and girls. Unless there is enough enrollment to have an in-town league, teams will play in the Merrimack Valley Basketball League against teams from Merrimac, West Newbury and Groveland.

GRADE 5-8 TRAVEL BASKETBALL
Competitive travel basketball. Includes 2 evening practices each week and 14-20 games played on weekends. Players must participate in tryouts overseen by independent evaluators. Rosters will be no larger than 10 players. Boys travel teams play in the Cape Ann League against towns on the North Shore. Girls play in the River Valley League against teams across the Merrimack Valley, Route 128 corridor and Southern New Hampshire.

GRADE 5-6 REC BASKETBALL
Team recreational basketball competing against local communities. Includes 1 practice per week and 8 games, typically on Saturdays. Teams compete in the Merrimack Valley Basketball League against teams from Merrimac, West Newbury, Groveland and Triton.

GRADE 7-8 REC BASKETBALL
Team recreational basketball. Includes 1 practice per week and games on weekends. Opponents will be based on enrollment and available competition.

2025-2026 AYRBL Basketball


Welcome to the 2025-26 AYRBL season! 
Our league offers basketball programs for kids in grades 1-8 for kids from Amesbury or who go to school here. We aim to offer teams at the travel and recreational levels and in-town clinics for our youngest players. The season runs from mid-November through February or early March, depending on your team's level and age.

TRYOUTS
To be invited to tryouts, you MUST register for travel basketball. Tryouts will be held between October 6-10 and you will be notified of the day and time. ONLY PLAYERS WHO TRY OUT ARE ELIGIBLE TO MAKE THE TEAM. Exceptions will be made only in extreme circumstances. If your child cannot make tryouts, you MUST notify the league before the tryout date. If your child does not make the travel team and chooses to play rec, we will refund you the difference.

PRACTICES/GAME TIMES
Practice and game times will be determined once we have completed tryouts and determined rosters and the number of teams. Practices will typically be M-F at Amesbury Middle School or one of the elementary schools.
Games will typically be held on the weekends at Amesbury High School, Amesbury Middle School or one of the elementary schools. Rec teams may be asked to play some games during the week.

All information provided in this registration is subject to change depending on school gym space, parent volunteers and player numbers. We are an all-volunteer league supporting more than 200 players, and we will do our best to find the right spot for each child. AYRBL is under new board for the upcoming season, and we are seeking volunteers to help us make the league even better for our kids and parents. Registration Costs

Grades 1-2: $100
Grade 3: $150
Grades 4-8 recreation: $220
Grades 4-8 travel: $320
Travel Team Uniforms - Estimated cost is $70-90 per player.
Rec team uniforms will be provided

GRADE 1-2 PROGRAM
This beginner program includes a one-hour weekly practice and scrimmage game. The practices and scrimmages will use lowered baskets. Activities will likely take place on Saturday mornings.

GRADE 3/4 RECREATIONAL PROGRAM
This program will hold one practice will hold a weekly weekday practice, approximately eight games (typically one per week), and playoffs. Games may be during the week or on weekends. Participation level will determine whether or not the teams are co-ed.

GRADES 4-8 RECREATIONAL BASKETBALL
Our Grade 5/6 and 7/8 programs have one weekly practice and play weekend games against surrounding school districts. Depending on participation, there may be multiple teams at either level. The teams compete in a playoff tournament after the end of the regular season. There are no try-outs for rec teams. Players will be provided a uniform.

GRADES 4-8 TRAVEL BASKETBALL
Our goal is to have a competitive travel team at each grade level, but this will be dependent on participation and coaching availability.
Boys travel teams play in the Cape Ann League. Girls teams play in the River Valley League. 
Travel teams practice two weeknights per week and play 16-18 game seasons and additional playoffs.
AYRBL will hold tryouts for all travel teams, led by an independent evaluator who is not connected to the team. Players MUST TRY OUT to make a travel team.
Because finding coaches willing to commit the time can be difficult, if the head coach of that travel team has a child on the roster, that child will be guaranteed a spot on the team.
Travel players will be asked to purchase their uniforms. Cost is expected to be $80-90. Uniforms will be available to order after try-outs in mid-October and the team rosters have been determined.

Players should bring their own basketball if possible. It is highly recommended you use the right size basketball. Recommendations are as follows:
27.5” for 4th grade girls
28.5” for Boys 4th- 6th and Girls 5th - 8th
29.5” for Boys 7th and 8th
