2020-21 Season Information

As you know, this is a challenging time for our community and its wonderful children. Our mission this year is to create an opportunity for boys and girls (grades 4 – 8) to participate in a basketball program that helps them grow as athletes, teammates and young sportsmen and sportswomen. We hope the 2020-21 AYRBL season will be one to remember for good reasons and to have a positive impact on the children of Amesbury.

AYRBL appreciates the participation seen in its online surveys. We had abundant and diverse responses and your input helped us to design a program that best serves the community.  Thank you again for your participation and please feel welcome to volunteer and help us ensure success during the next several months.

Because Amesbury schools are closed, we have secured court time at The Sports Barn in Hampton, New Hampshire. The program will run from Monday, November 16 through Friday, February 19.  We are currently looking to extend the program to March 10. This facility has four high-quality courts with great ventilation for the basketball activities we will pursue. During the summer and fall, The Sports Barn has hosted youth basketball tournaments for almost a dozen weekends and there have been no reported outbreaks of COVID-19 as a result of these activities. Several Amesbury children have played in these tournaments, and we believe the protocols followed there have contributed to their safe execution.

Additional details are provided below.

  • AYRBL for Grades 4 to 8 is aiming to start the week of November 16. It will consist of two one-hour practices for each grade, focusing on skills development and scrimmaging within team/age specific cohorts. Each grade will have one cohort for boys and one for girls.

  • Amesbury Youth Rotary Basketball League (AYRBL) will be limiting the number of participants to 20 players in each of the team/age group cohorts.

  • Due to restrictions on how many people are allowed at a time, spectators will not be permitted in The Sports Barn during any session.

  • Registration is open on the AYRBL website. There are no in-person registrations allowed in the facility. A Registration and COVID Waiver from The Sports Barn and AYRBL is required for each player to be on file before any participation.

  • Cost: $160. Payments plans and multi-child discounts are available. By limiting court time to only 20 participants per session, priority will be given to those players who pay, choose a payment plan or enter into an arrangement with the AYRBL first. As such, signing up as soon as possible is important. The cancellation policy is listed on the website under "In-Town Basketball" and also in the registration form.

  • As part of registration, players will receive their own reversible Amesbury practice jersey to take home with them and keep at the end of the season.

  • AYRBL is preparing a set of COVID-19 planning documents for players, parents, coaches and volunteers. These will be posted on the AYRBL webpage. Each team/age group cohort will have an assigned COVID-19 Coordinator to assist teams in safe basketball activities.

  • Players and coaches will be required to wear masks while in The Sports Barn, except for designated mask and water breaks.

  • There will be separate pathways in and out of the facility.

  • On-site temperature checks are required before entering The Sports Barn along with the use of hand sanitizer. Coaches will have sanitizer for balls and hands. An additional sanitizing break will be taken during each session.

  • Players should bring their own balls and masks. Recommendations for balls are indoor/outdoor balls sized at 28.5” for girls and boys 4 through 6 and 29.5” for 7 and 8 boys. Please click this link for more information about balls.

  • Due to limited court space, AYRBL will not offer practices at this time, for the 2nd and 3rd graders. We eagerly hope to offer these programs in Winter/Spring 2021.

We will limit activities to drills, practice activities and scrimmages within our intown cohorts. More news will be communicated regarding any expansion of a regular season once we have more information to share.

Last, it’s important to note everything is subject to change. Coronavirus case data in our community will be monitored and responsible decisions will be made accordingly.  We will follow the guidance of both Massachusetts and New Hampshire. This may result in pausing or canceling activities. We will continue to keep your family updated via email from [email protected]. In the case of a season cancellation, refund information is provided as part of the registration form.

The safety of our players, coaches and volunteers is a priority to AYRBL. Please continue to be safe and take steps to prevent exposure and illness for your family and members of our community. If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me, your player’s coach, or any of the other board members.
